Snowy Mountains

Snowy Mountains.

Clear

Year-round adventures await in one of Australia’s most breathtaking natural backdrops, the Snowy Mountains.

The Snowy Mountains, or “The Snowies” as locals affectionately call them, is one of Australia’s most iconic natural landscapes. Located in southern New South Wales, this breathtaking region is home to the country’s highest peak, Mount Kosciuszko, a winter hotspot for skiing and a year-round destination for adventurers, nature lovers, and those who appreciate serene beauty.

Whether you’re a thrill-seeker craving adrenaline on the slopes during winter or someone looking to hike along pristine mountain trails in the warmer months, the Snowy Mountains have it all. With rugged peaks, crystal-clear lakes, and a rich history, the area promises an unforgettable experience no matter the season.

When the region is blanketed in snow, it transforms into Australia’s most breathtaking winter destination. Skiers and snowboarders flock to the region’s popular resorts, including Thredbo, Perisher, and Charlotte Pass.

Perisher is Australia’s largest ski resort, boasting over 1,200 hectares of skiable terrain. Thredbo, known for its steep runs and buzzing après-ski scene, caters to all levels of skiers and snowboarders. Charlotte Pass, the highest resort in Australia, has family-friendly runs and a secluded alpine experience.

Beyond the ski resorts, there are loads of other snow-based activities to enjoy. Snowshoeing through quiet alpine forests or riding on a snowmobile lets you experience the beauty of the mountains away from the main slopes.

The beauty of the Snowy Mountains in winter is otherworldly. The landscape is awe-inspiring, whether gazing at the snow-covered peaks from the warmth of a ski lodge or standing atop a mountain with your skis beneath you.

The Snowy Mountains are reborn as a hiker’s paradise when the snow melts and the warmer months arrive. The rugged terrain of Kosciuszko National Park becomes accessible to everyone, with an extensive network of walking trails that take you through some of Australia’s most stunning alpine landscapes. The Mount Kosciuszko Summit Walk is a must-do, as it leads to the top of the country’s highest peak. Despite being the tallest mountain in Australia, Mount Kosciuszko is relatively manageable to climb, making it accessible for all fitness levels.

Mountain biking is also popular, with various trails catering to beginners and experienced riders. The Thredbo Valley Track is one of the most scenic mountain biking routes, taking you through lush meadows, along the banks of the Thredbo River, and through eucalyptus forests.

If you’re looking for a more chilled time, the region’s lakes and rivers provide a stunning setting for fishing, kayaking, or simply picnicking by the water’s edge. Lake Jindabyne, an artificial lake formed by the damming of the Snowy River, is a hub for water-based activities. In summer, it’s a hotspot for swimming, sailing, and stand-up paddle-boarding.

For history lovers, the Snowy Mountains also hold a significant place in Australia’s heritage. The region is the site of the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme, one of Australia’s most well-known engineering projects. Visitors can learn more about this engineering feat by visiting Cooma’s Snowy Hydro Discovery Centre.

Whether you visit during the crisp, cool days of winter or the sun-drenched summer months, the Snowy Mountains are a captivating destination.
